As we leave North Holland behind, we travel onwards and come to Friesland. There are many wonderful features to be enjoyed here, from the Seedysterktour to the Spitkeet. A chance to leave about how people of the past lived in this area, as well as a sport unique to the area. There's all of this, and so much more, in an area famous for water sports!
Seedysterktower
The Wadden area is very easily discovered from the Seedykstertower, which is just outside the quaint village of Marrum. However, there’s more than just the Waddenean Islands, which many people first think of. On the shores, the area that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009 is easily explorable. The tours on offer allow an excellent chance to discover the flora and fauna, or do it yourself! You can climb the lookout tower for a ranging view of the Wadden, or choose to visit the museum or exhibition.
The Spitkeet
The Spitkeet, in the Frisian town of Harkema, is both an open-air museum and a theme park. The museum displays how people in the Frisian and Greenlandic moor lived in the past. Gaze in admiration at the different types of homes, and the various circumstances people used to live and work in. As well as the attractions on offer, the Spitkeet organises many activities, along with cycling and hiking routes. Through these, you can discover the wonderful Friesian Forests.
De Rat
Between the towns of IJlst and Sneek, you can find an old wood mill called “De Rat”. Originally located in the Zaan region, it was moved to IJlst in 1829. The mill wasn’t working for a few years, but as come back into production recently. There are tribes that stick close to the water, hear the rotation of the wicks, and smell the fresh scent of newly-sawn timber. Experience and witness a craft that has been running for three centuries in the mill. The mill is open to all visitors from 9:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays. From May to September, it is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 to 17:00.
Fierlieppen
Fierlieppen, also known as polstokverspringen, is a true Frisian sport. The athletes attempts to bridge a gap, with the largest distance, by using a pole stick. With the presence of the Holtrop family in Delfstrahuizen, it is possible to partake yourself! The family explains it clearly, and the chance to practice without actually getting which. After this, the work begins - work more akin to fun! However, if you wish to stay dry, there are also a variety of other activities on the farm.
Wine and Vineyards
Wine and vineyards may not be the first thought that comes to mind when thinking of Friesland. However, you will find the Thabor Wine and Culture Farm. Thabor is a historic place where wine, culture and the outdoors meet. The farmhouse is built on the ruins of the old Thabor Monastery, and for many years has served as a dairy farm. In 2010, the farm turned into a vineyard, upon which you can taste the wine. There are three different tasters, which are combined with a tour of the company, a visit to the vineyard, and an explanation of the wine and the wine-making process. The farm also has its own mini-campsite, which means you don’t have to drive back.
