Roadtrip Through the Netherlands - Part Three

June 15, 2017 in Destinations

Now that we've finished our time in Friesland, it's time to move to our next city: Groningen! Although it'll be slightly different this time, as we'll now be staying in the city itself!

See & Do

Despite its reputation as being a student city, there is a wide range of things to see and activities to do. There are many walking tours on offer, and thus easy to learn about the city whilst visiting the must-see places. These walks can easily be booked at the Tourist Office, where you can also buy information books should you so wish. On these walks, you’ll visit the Martinitores, and witness an amazing view from the ‘d’Olle Grieze’. The unique architecture of the Groninger Museum makes it worth a visit alone, whilst the Nederlands Stripmuseum has a rich history of Dutch comic strips. The GRID Graphic Museum not only hosts a wide range of graphic art, but allows the chance to create your own. If events are more what you fancy, Groningen once again has plenty to offer! The summer has various food festivals, as well as real Groningen festivals. These include the Bommen Berend, ZomerWelwaart and Noordezron. On top of this, the city offers relaxation, notably in the chance to take a dip in the Hoornsemeer or Paterswoldsemeer.

Eat & Drink

Being in a camper, it’s quite easy to cook for yourself. Often, it’s the cost-effective option. However, to truly immerse yourself in the Groningen culture, there are some local dishes that have to be tried. At the Drie Gezusters, you should try the real Grønne mustard soup. If not that, order a local beer and a Groninger dry sauce dish. Perhaps a taste of Groningen’s tasty egg ball! What about the places the the students favour? De Uurwerker, de Concerthuis or Wadapartja. The latter is particularly nice, due to the Groningen names on the menu. There, you will find more information of restaurants in Groningen to eat and drink.

The local dish, the egg ball, is definitely something to be tried

Camping Site

Within both walking and cycling distance from the city center is Stadspark, which also hosts Camping Stadpark. This is an ideal spot to park your camper. It is fully equipped, and serves as a perfect spot to plant a base for your visit to Groningen.
